Girls on the Run

All spots are currently filled for the Spring, 2016 Girls on the Run team for DES as of 1/27/16.

New 5k Race Date: Saturday, May 7, 2015

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Girls on the Run!  GOTR is a terrific after-school program designed to reach elementary and middle school grade girls. The program is delivered by community volunteers, teachers and moms for ten weeks. GOTR meets right after school twice a week for about an hour each day. GOTR utilizes games and group activities to teach running and impart health concepts.

We have two main goals. Our first goal: at the end of our ten weeks, each girl will run a 5K race! Our second goal: to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living! The curriculum includes topics such as:

Self-Talk Matters

Untangling our Emotions

Healthy Habits of Life

Attitude of Gratitude

Let’s Cooperate

Putting an End to Gossip

I choose to Stop and take a BrThRR

Our practices will be Monday and Thursday. Parents must be able to pick their daughter up by 5:00 PM. This program is offered on a first come, first served basis. In other words, the first 20 girls to turn in their payment to Coach Keller by February 5, 2016 will be allowed to join our program. Program cost will be $70.00 unless your child is a Wilmington Family YMCA member. This price is $60.00. For those children on free/reduced lunch there is financial assistance available (see application for more information). Please fill out the registration form and return to Coach Keller by February 5, 2016. No registrations will be accepted after that date. Make check payable to the Wilmington Family YMCA.

What is included with the registration fee?

·    20 curriculum based 1- 1 ½ hour lessons over the course of 10 weeks delivered by certified volunteer coaches.

·    5k entry fee

 ·    Program t-shirt

·    Program water bottle

 ·    Race medal

·    Race certificate of completion

 ·    Lesson materials

We will be running the Marine Chevy Shuffle on Saturday, May 7th!! Your child will need one running buddy for this race. This can be a family member or family friend, but they must be over 16. If there isn’t a family member or family friend that can run with your child please let us know, and we will find a running buddy for them. All running buddies need to pay a $15.00 race fee which includes a race t-shirt and a personalize race bib. Hurry and register price will increase the closer it gets to race day. Please see coach on how to register as a running buddy.

Hope to see you at our first practice on February 22, 2016 from 3:45-5:00.  If you have any questions please contact Coach Keller at savanna.keller@onslow.k12.nc.us.
