Spelling Tests

Spelling tests are used to assess students on their mastery of the skill practiced during the cycle. They are typically given the day after a WAVE day. This ensures students have 5 full days of working with the focused skill.  This test is for formative purposes only and allows me to meet each students needs in word study.  If you see a poor score come home, use that opportunity to work with your child on that specific skill.

Here is a glance at the skills we will focus on in March & April . (in order)

R controlled vowels ( - ar - er - ir - or)

Revisit magic e ( bike, stripe, cake, tube)

past tense verbs- adding ed ( jumped, kicked )

irregular verbs ( swam, ran, was)

2016-17 Homework Policy

After much research this summer, we are trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day and/or an individual task we feel your child may need to work on. There will not be formal homework assigned this year.

Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance. Rather, we ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success: eating dinner as a family, reading together, playing outside, and getting your child to bed early.

Your child may bring home books on his/her reading level with questions that you can use to spark conversation. Both of these will be located in your child’s folder. We will also have optional resources posted on our websites to meet your child’s needs.

Thanks- The first grade team :)

Valentines Day Mailbox

Student's mailboxes are due Monday Feb. 13th  We will celebrate Valentines Day on Tuesday the 14th. .  If you need a shoebox, please let me know, I have tons at home! :)

Info about the mailboxes will go home later this month. Thank You

100th Day of School

Feb. 10th is the 100th Day of School!!!!

Of course, we love to celebrate this day.  In order for our celebration day to be a success I am asking that each student create a shirt to wear on Feb. 10th, with 100 items attached or drawn on.  Some ideas I have seen in the past include, 100 buttons, 100 ribbons, 100 shapes drawn on, 100 googley eyes, 100 stickers, 100 Q-Tips, etc.  Be creative but remember, your child will be WEARING this shirt, so make sure items will stay on and will be comfortable to wear.  Happy Crafting!

PBIS Celebration!!!

Our 3rd nine week behavior celebration will be on April 7,2017. First grade students will need to earn $203  to attend this event. We will have an egg hunt outside towards the end of the day.  If a student did not earn enough dollars or had an office referral they will not attend the hunt and will have a reflection meeting to discuss their behavior and give strategies and ideas on how to improve their behavior. Continue to encourage your child to Catch the WAVE everyday so they can enjoy these special school wide celebrations.
